BEGGING: A PASSION OR COMPULSION

"Indian has over 4 lakh beggars with West Bengal's81,000 being the maximum among the states, the government said. There are 4,13,670 beggars - 2.2 lakh males and 1.91 lakh females - in the country, Minister of State for Social Justice Vijay Sampla said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today."  Source- ndtv.com

Have you ever travelled a busy place, such as a bus station, a railway station or any spiritual place? If yes, then you would have probably seen some weird, badly dressed and dirty children over there. Some are with their parents too. They search for the money for the whole day. It’s their daily routine, from morning to night. We have to discuss them and their passion. Let us discuss, whether they are compelled, or they are enjoying this work.
If you have ever seen a beggar, then he makes a helpless face and any passer can give him any help, often some money. Then where does this money go? Do they beg on their own decision, or they are forced to do so? These are some common questions, which rise in everyone’s minds.

Now, if we talk about their need, then we see that human beings have three common needs. These are food, clothes and a home. Then we find that beggars get their food by their profession and they are not worried about their clothes. They have enough clothes to cover up their body and to look like a beggar. These are my own thoughts and someone may have different thoughts. If we talk about their home, then slums are the residence for them, otherwise they are compelled to sleep under an open sky.

Most of the beggars are physically disabled. Maybe this thing brings them to this profession. Some persons from our society try to make profit and make a group or gang of the beggars. It’s like working under someone or maybe like a private job.

Should we help them?
This question may be common in all minds, because there is also a risk of the misuse of our money. But the answer is YES. We must help them, but not with money. We should give them food, clothes or the things they need, because the money given to them can be misused. Also, the kids may have some bad habits due to this money. The lapse food from our home can also be given to them. This completes their need of food and prevents the wastage of food.

Where do they come from?
The beggars are a part of our society. They also have the citizenship of the country. But the conditions in their life bring them to begging. They all are either dropped by their family, or they haven’t their own family. Some of them are mentally disturbed and mostly they are physically handicapped. Some people have their whole family in this profession. Their poverty is the reason behind them. India has a large number of beggars. They can be seen from small towns to big cities. The life of such beggars or poor families can be seen in the slums all around the country.

Ban on Begging?
This is a question, which has still not any answer. Government says that begging is illegal and it is also banned in many states. But still there is a gradual increase in the number of beggars. The Indian government favors the child education but these poor families have no money to educate their children. If government bans the begging of kids, then their families are still not in the favour of their free education because it has been the habit of them, and they don’t want to get away from this.

What should we do?
If you think about your responsibility for them, then they don’t need anything from us, instead of some love, and some help. They are poor but still they are human beings and for humanity, we need to help them. They also are a part of our society.
This is weird that even after 71 years of freedom; India has not got freedom from poverty, corruption and so many other issues. This brings us in a category of developing country. If we take an example of Japan, we see how that stood up on his own feet after the atomic attacks on two of its cities during the Second World War. India needs to wake up now and its time to see the poverty in the country. Government will have to take strict steps now to fight against this.
